Mahindra launches powerful electric SUV, travels 656 km in single charge

Mahindra XEV 9e:  In a bold move that’s set to shake up the Indian automotive market, Mahindra & Mahindra has unveiled its highly anticipated XEV 9e electric SUV. This latest offering from the homegrown auto giant promises to blend cutting-edge technology with premium features, setting a new benchmark in the rapidly evolving electric vehicle segment.

A New Chapter in Mahindra’s EV Journey

The XEV 9e marks a significant milestone in Mahindra’s electric vehicle strategy. As part of the company’s ‘Electric Origin’ series, this SUV represents Mahindra’s commitment to sustainable mobility and its ambition to lead the charge in India’s electric revolution.

K.N. Radhakrishnan, Director & CEO of Mahindra & Mahindra, commented on the launch: “With the XEV 9e, we aimed to create a vehicle that not only meets the performance expectations of today’s discerning consumers but also appeals to their sense of style and sustainability. Every aspect of this SUV has been carefully considered to deliver a premium electric driving experience.”

Design and Aesthetics: A Head-Turner on Wheels

The XEV 9e boasts a design language that’s both futuristic and distinctly Mahindra. The front fascia features a sleek LED headlamp setup with distinctive daytime running lights, creating a unique light signature that sets it apart on the road. The SUV’s silhouette is characterized by a coupe-like roofline, giving it a sporty and dynamic appearance.

Measuring 4789mm in length, 1907mm in width, and standing 1694mm tall, the XEV 9e cuts an imposing figure. Its 2775mm wheelbase promises ample interior space, a crucial factor for the Indian market.

Powerhouse Performance

Under the sculpted bodywork lies the heart of the XEV 9e’s appeal – its electric powertrain. Built on Mahindra’s new INGLO (INdian Global) platform, the SUV is equipped with a rear-mounted electric motor available in two power outputs: 170kW and 210kW, both delivering a robust 380Nm of torque.

The XEV 9e offers two battery pack options: a 59kWh unit and a larger 79kWh pack. Mahindra claims an impressive MIDC (Modified Indian Driving Cycle) range of 542-656km, depending on the battery size. This puts the XEV 9e at the forefront of electric range in its segment.

Performance hasn’t been overlooked, with Mahindra boasting a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 6.8 seconds for the XEV 9e. This combination of range and performance positions the SUV as a viable alternative to both premium electric and conventional luxury SUVs.

Charging and Efficiency

Recognizing the importance of charging infrastructure in EV adoption, Mahindra has equipped the XEV 9e with impressive charging capabilities. The SUV supports AC charging up to 11kW and DC fast charging up to a whopping 175kW. This means users can top up from 20-80% in just 20 minutes when using a compatible fast charger.

Tech-Savvy Interior

Step inside the XEV 9e, and you’re greeted by a cabin that seamlessly blends luxury with technology. The centerpiece is a massive 43.3-inch widescreen display, comprising three 12.3-inch screens. This setup provides access to the infotainment system, driver information, and passenger entertainment.

The XEV 9e comes loaded with features including a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, multi-zone climate control, and three distinct interior themes – calm, cozy, and club – allowing owners to personalize their driving environment.

Advanced Safety and Autonomous Features

Mahindra has placed a strong emphasis on safety and driver assistance with the XEV 9e. The SUV boasts Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving capabilities, utilizing five radars and a vision camera system. A 360-degree surround-view camera with recording capability, accessible via a mobile app, adds an extra layer of security and convenience.

The XEV 9e is also equipped with twelve ultrasonic sensors, enabling autonomous parking features – a first for an Indian-made vehicle in this segment.

Market Positioning and Pricing

Mahindra has positioned the XEV 9e as a premium offering in the electric SUV space. With a starting price of approximately ₹21.90 lakh (ex-showroom), it presents a compelling value proposition against both domestic and international competitors.

Aniruddha Haldar, Vice President of Marketing at Mahindra & Mahindra, elaborated on the pricing strategy: “With the XEV 9e, we’ve created a product that offers premium features and advanced technology at a price point that remains accessible to aspiring EV buyers. We believe this approach will not only appeal to existing Mahindra fans but also attract new customers looking for a sophisticated, feature-rich electric SUV.”

Availability and Future Plans

Mahindra plans to commence deliveries of the XEV 9e in late February or early March 2025. Initially, the SUV will be available through Mahindra’s existing dealership network, allowing customers to compare it directly with the company’s ICE offerings.

Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director and CEO for Auto and Farm Sectors at Mahindra & Mahindra, explained this strategy: “We want to give customers the choice between ICE and EVs under one roof. This approach allows us to leverage our existing network while providing a comprehensive range of options to our customers.”

While the XEV 9e is primarily focused on the Indian market, Mahindra hasn’t ruled out the possibility of international expansion. The company has hinted at potential launches in other markets, including Australia, where Mahindra already has a presence with its ICE vehicles.

Industry Impact and Outlook

The launch of the Mahindra XEV 9e is expected to have a significant impact on the Indian electric vehicle landscape. Its combination of long range, advanced features, and competitive pricing is likely to accelerate EV adoption in the premium SUV segment.

Moreover, as a homegrown offering, the XEV 9e represents a major step forward in India’s EV manufacturing capabilities. It showcases the country’s ability to produce world-class electric vehicles, potentially paving the way for increased exports and establishing India as a hub for EV production.

As the XEV 9e hits the roads in 2025, all eyes will be on how it performs in the real world and whether it can challenge the dominance of established players in the premium electric SUV space. With its blend of style, technology, and performance, the Mahindra XEV 9e seems well-positioned to become a game-changer in India’s electric mobility journey.
